Explore speed and stopping distance

Explore why stopping distance grows quickly with speed. Separate the distance travelled during reaction from the distance covered while braking.

What the numbers tell us

Enable JavaScript to calculate with your own values.

Why it works

reaction distance = vt; braking distance = v²/(2a)

Assumptions and limits

An ideal straight, level-road model with constant braking deceleration after a fixed reaction time. It is not a safe-following-distance recommendation or a prediction for any vehicle or road.

Try a small challenge

At 10 m/s with 1 s reaction time and 5 m/s² braking, total stopping distance?
A little hint

Add vt to v²/(2a).
